Today I am very excited to present to you the final result of this research.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/basbasbas.com\/thesis\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>The Answer is the Ecosystem: Marketing Music Through Non-Linear Communication<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The music business has had particular trouble adjusting to the <strong>realities of the digital age<\/strong>, so I set out to develop a model that fully <strong>integrates<\/strong> all of these realities in order to help out artists and labels. The designer, <a href=\"http:\/\/ryanvanetten.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Ryan Van Etten<\/a>, did an awesome job at creating a great platform for the thesis\u2019 content.<\/p>\n<p>The research revealed that <a href=\"http:\/\/basbasbas.com\/thesis\/problem#piracy_and_convenience\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>convenience<\/strong><\/a><strong> is one of the most important factors for music consumption<\/strong>. Due to the fact that the music industry has <a href=\"http:\/\/basbasbas.com\/thesis\/problem#p2p_lost_control\" target=\"_blank\">lost control<\/a> over the distribution of their content, this desire for convenience has resulted in piracy. Meanwhile, consumers are <a href=\"http:\/\/basbasbas.com\/thesis\/problem#figure_3\" target=\"_blank\">replacing<\/a> traditional media with new media with the percentage of respondents who have never bought a physical CD increasing per generation. People have <a href=\"http:\/\/basbasbas.com\/thesis\/problem#varying_expectations\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>different expectations<\/strong><\/a><strong> as to what price is reasonable<\/strong> for different products. An important trend being that people enjoy consumption that <a href=\"http:\/\/basbasbas.com\/thesis\/problem#feels_like_free_conclusion\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>feels like free<\/strong><\/a>, which has made that which is <a href=\"http:\/\/basbasbas.com\/thesis\/problem#price_and_value_conclusion\" target=\"_blank\">easily copied<\/a> cheaper and that which can&#8217;t be copied more expensive. Although consumers like &#8216;free&#8217;, even <a href=\"http:\/\/basbasbas.com\/thesis\/problem#pirates_as_consumers_conclusion\" target=\"_blank\">consumers that frequently pirate music<\/a> often regularly spend money on music.<\/p>\n<p>As a solution to these challenges, the author recommends that artists and labels starts integrating the concept of the <a href=\"http:\/\/basbasbas.com\/thesis\/solution\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>ecosystem<\/strong><\/a><strong> <\/strong>into their communication strategy. <strong>The <\/strong><a href=\"http:\/\/basbasbas.com\/thesis\/solution#section_5-1-3\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>ecosystem<\/strong><\/a><strong> is an active fanbase which is interconnected through non-linear communication<\/strong>. This means producing a \u2018story worth telling\u2019 to turn the internet&#8217;s non-linear communication and loss of control over distribution into an opportunity to get <a href=\"http:\/\/basbasbas.com\/thesis\/solution#section_5-1-1\" target=\"_blank\">discovered<\/a>. The second step is <a href=\"http:\/\/basbasbas.com\/thesis\/solution#section_5-1-2\" target=\"_blank\">retaining the attention<\/a> by connecting with listeners and connecting them to each other <a href=\"http:\/\/basbasbas.com\/thesis\/solution#someone_elses_party\" target=\"_blank\">like the host of a party<\/a> would with guests. Turning the ecosystem into a fun party helps energize the fanbase and amplifies the aforementioned \u2018story worth telling\u2019. Marketing opportunities come from <a href=\"http:\/\/basbasbas.com\/thesis\/solution#section_5-2-3\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>listening<\/strong><\/a><strong> to the ecosystem and releasing the products they want<\/strong>, as opposed to the classic approach of pushing the product that you want them to buy. Internet-enabled concepts such as pre-ordering and digital releases allow labels and artists to offer the ecosystem abundant choice to play into all the different expectations regarding price and product characteristics. This most likely will involve a mix of (feels like) free and publishing products or services that are <a href=\"http:\/\/basbasbas.com\/thesis\/solution#better_than_free\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>better than free<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Hi there!
