Downtime

Last night BasBasBas.com got shut down by Bluehost over performance issues. The site’s back online now, but to prevent future account suspensions without notice in the future, I’m going to be changing the layout of the site to make it more simplistic. Since I’ll be moving to Bulgaria next week and the site’s current layout was mostly geared towards my stay in Istanbul, the shut down came with great timing to motivate me to change the site once again.

Ulterior goal: to increase the pleasure of the reading experience.

Sit back and don’t worry too much about the layout for now. It might be a good idea to subscribe to my RSS feed or get email updates in your inbox free of charge of course. 😉

If I can make a suggestion, try Drupal, it scales a lot better than WordPress, if you believe certain people.

Or maybe some WordPress caching plugins to make your site faster?

Yup, that may be a good idea. I made my own site extremely simple partly for the same reason, too. Definitely caching makes all the difference, anyway!

The Yahoo Speed guidelines are also really good, although a bit technical.

Thanks for the tips. I’m not really a web developer, so it might be hard to achieve all this, but we’ll see.

Drupal or an open source CMS seems the way to go right now, yeah.

I do use the caching plugins mentioned, but they don’t help that much.

Certainly ,this is bad reputation for bluehost. Wish you all the best with your new theme. My only wish is that you will keep the Top Commentators widget on.

The Super-Cache plugin would make the most sense for you. Although to be honest, so would a move to Hostgator. A CMS is probably overkill for a blog.

Sorry for the double comment – I just noticed something. You say you already use the caching plugins mentioned – which ones? I checked the source of your site and it has no mention of SuperCache, which is the best plugin for this kind of stuff – if it’s installed, it’s not working properly. View the source of my blog and scroll to the very bottom and you’ll see it mentions the page was generated via WP-SuperCache in however many seconds. That’s not on your blog.

Good to see your site back up and running. Look forward to the ‘changes’ in due course.
    Welcome back to Bulgaria 🙂

    @7 Ben Barden.

Well that depends on the CMS, your blog and of your definition of CMS… 🙂

Thanks Ben. Anyway, what caused the problem was not the loading of the website, but some SQL queries originating from some plugin that uses tags, my guess is a Related Posts plugin.

I have a lot of bandwidth per month and Bluehost’s servers are good, so there shouldn’t be a problem with traffic. I’ve been SlashDotted before and everything was fine.

As for the CMS comment… Even WordPress or Blogger are content management systems in my eyes… Of course I’ll take it easy… Like I said, I’m not a web developer, so I don’t want to make it too complicated on myself.

Atniz: oh, I have a lot to say about recent issues with Bluehost. This is not the only issue I’ve had with them. Considering sending WordPress an email to stop recommending them.

Not only will I do my best to keep Top Commenters showing… I will also reactivate CommentLuv, as it was causing problems with this template.

Martin: and what a strange time to be coming to Bulgaria. 😉
