  • Last night goes into the ‘crazy’ category.

EDIT — Forgot to include the end of the night.. fuck it. It was crazy. Alright? Alright.

What happened? During work I got a call from James (an Erasmus student and friend from England) to see if I had time to hang out. After work we met up and somehow I got into a very outgoing state. After about half an hour James had to go to another part of the city to teach English and I went to my apartment. After sitting at my apartment for about 45 minutes and mixing some music, I decided that it would be stupid to stay inside with all the life going on outside. I decided to relive the experiences my first weeks again. So I went outside, walking towards the university, with the plan to talk to strangers and see where it would get me.

The plan soon changed when I ran into an American guy I know called Trey. We crashed a class (come on, they were in a bar..), had a beer and then got on the bus to Studentski Grad where we would have dinner with James, Pieter (Belgium) and Emil (Holland).

After dinner we went back to Pieter and Emil’s place and for some reason we thought it was a good idea to play a drinking game. This is where Romain (France (sorry if I misspelled your name)) After a couple of shots of beer, and a couple of shots of rum, we quit playing. Then some Bulgarian girls showed up and we all watched the newest episode of Southpark. Good times.

Then we went to a bar. Pretty alternative place. Really cool. Forgot the name. Had some beer, had more beer, had more beer. Watched people I know make out, watched people go home together. As I was outside with Pieter we managed to run into some Belgian-Bulgarians (not sure how that worked, was a bit drunk at the time). We had a good laugh and made plans to go out tonight.

They have my number. We’ll see what happens. That would be crazy. Their energy and our group’s energy… combined… Nuclear fusion.

  • Abbie Hoffman said…

“The sixties. No matter what people think about the sixties. They know that young people were out in the streets, taking on the most powerful government in the world. And we didn’t win every battle. But think about what we did accomplish. Apartheid was driven out of America. We ended legal segregation. We ended the idea that you could send a million soldiers ten thousand miles away to fight some evil unjust war. We ended the idea that women are second-class citizens. And we were reckless, we were silly, arrogant and headstrong. We were right… And we didn’t mind saying so. My government has been trying to silence me my whole life. I don’t know what it is about my ideas that is so dangerous. But I say to you, you young people and to you, my, that’s my son here. It’s always the young that made change. You don’t get these kind of ideas when you’re middle-aged. The young have daring creativity and energy. They have impatience… So you take your young legs and your eagerness and your natural feelings for justice and peace and a better deal for our planet and you go out… and you make tomorrow better than it is today. You go out, and you save your country. It’s your turn now.”

Please have a look at “Steal This Movie” on Google Video. This is the biographical film on Abbie Hoffman, a legendary protest organizer. Watch it now or bookmark it so you can see it later. You can also see it below.

Let’s stop waiting for the next Malcolm X, MLK, Abbie Hoffman, whatever. Stop your excuses. Listen to Abbie’s words, listen to their words… “It’s your turn now”. You think they were waiting for someone to come along to lead them, as if they were livestock? No. They were more human than most of us. ACT.

  • Why you should use StumbleUpon, reason #2

Okay, another reason why you should use StumbleUpon is something that I started using a lot quite recently. I accidentally emailed my complete GMail addressbook recently with an invite to StumbleUpon, really hate it when that happens, but it resulted in a lot of people signing up. So now, when I’m surfing the web, I use this tool included in the Stumble bar, which is just awesome. It’s the “Send to” option. Basically, whenever you’re viewing a website and you know that a particular friend of yours would really like it, you can easily send it to this friend with two mouseclicks from the main browser window. No need to log into anything or other bull****. This friend can then view whatever’s recommended with just one mouseclick from the main browser window. It’s a really awesome tool that I want to start using more. So friends, acquaintances, readers… PLEASE sign up!

Go check out my profile, add me as a friend, I will do the same. After that, we can easily exchange links. No more hassle with instant messengers or emailing.

  • Saving the Shroom

So it appears that they set up a way to protest the Dutch government’s decision to ban ‘magic mushrooms’. On RedDePaddo.nl there is an email you can sign which is automatically sent to the parliament and ministers. Apparently Monday afternoon, 10,000 people had signed it already… Tuesday morning, this was 20,000!

They’re taking more initiatives than just that, so be sure to check out their website. At least SEND AN EMAIL! They also give a bunch of great reasons why these mushrooms should not be banned:

  • Bulgaria and the ‘euro’

After a big row about the spelling of ‘euro’ in Bulgarian, finally a compromise has been found. Bulgaria, which does not yet use the euro, will spell it as ‘eur’ even though their request to spell it as evro. It’s simply ridiculous that this was turned down. In Cyrillic spelling, the Western ‘u’ is spelled as a v. ‘Auto’ is spelled as ‘avto’, Europe as Evropa and there are a lot more examples. If I understand the language well enough, ‘eur’ would be pronounced as separate vowels instead of the ‘eu’ sound that we know.

Not allowing Bulgaria to use their own spelling is really quite foolish. Bureaucrats.

  • Weekend Recap

What a weekend. Friday morning I left for Troyan with my colleague and her husband to make a report on an event there. Took a lot of pictures. That evening we went to have dinner with all the people who were invited to the event. The deputy mayor of Troyan sent a group of students to our table, since they would be able to speak English to me. I’ll get back to that one later. So after dinner, the group decided they wanted to go get a coffee.. I decided to go along and my colleague joined. So a coffee became an alcoholic drink and what became one alcoholic drink became many. Managed to not speak to any of the girls except one. I wonder if I disappointed the deputy mayor… Woke up early the next day to resume work, wondering when I would be able to sleep more than 4 hours (I’m on a sleep diet again).

We left at around 1… Or started leaving anyway. I got back to my apartment, had about half an hour to get other stuff and buy food. Then I had to go to Bobi’s house, because we were going to a psytrance party on the Rila mountain. After about 2.5 hours of mucking about in Sofia, we were finally on the road. Was a tad hard to find, but in the end we found it… It was SO cold. During the night it got colder and colder, to a point where I did not want to remove myself from the fire anymore. Glad that Bobi could lend me his winter-jacket. At about 6 I grabbed my blanket and slept on the forest floor for about 2 hours. Came home on Sunday at around 12.30 I think. Slept until 8pm, when I decided to go get some pizza. Dead-tired still.. That’s why I’m keeping this post short. I’ll let the picture speak for themselves.

  • Free Burma, Mail China

Found this through Ko Htike’s blog. Please do this! If you’re not too sure about why we’re asking China to take action, please see this post (Why Does Beijing Strongly Support the Myanmar Government?).

    Dear all,
If you would like to help Myanmar, please help like this.
    With best wishes for you.

Subject: Burma: Sending a message or two or three or four… to China

    HOW TO HELP BURMA?

If everybody we know emails a request (not for tickets, but for
China’s action for Burma) to ” target=”_blank”>, it will
significantly slow down Olympics ticket sales and call China’s
attention to the matter. China may ignore protests, hunger strikes,
petitions, wearing-red shirts, etc. But China cannot ignore these
emails, which get in the way of processing Olympics ticket requests.

Please see the template at the bottom. Please also pledge to send the
same email every 6 hours, or every time you check your email. If they
get tens of thousands of email a day, they will have to do something
    about it.

    WHY?

China should use its leverage to bring reconciliation and peace in
Burma. However, it recently vetoed a Security Council resolution on
Burma. Yet with the threat of Olympics boycott, China has yielded
significantly to condemn Sudan’s genocidal regime.

Please note that this action is NOT a call to boycott the Olympics.
    ============================================

Send to ” target=”_blank”> every 6 hours, or every time you
    check your email.

    ==================================================

    Subject: re: tickets

    Dear Sirs/Madams,

I am very interested in purchasing tickets to some of the events at
    next year’s Olympic games.

However I cannot, in good conscience, attend the Beijing Olympics
unless your government uses its influence to improve the political
situation in Burma. China has substantial economic interests in the
country, provides large amounts of economic aid, and invests heavily
in infrastructure projects there. Additionally, your government
provides extensive logistical support to Burma’s military government.
All this make China uniquely placed to influence it.

The people of Burma have, in a very peaceful manner, insisted that
their rights be respected. I ask no more of your government than that
it cease its support for the current regime, and encourage dialog with
the democratically elected representatives of the Burmese nation.

I, the Burmese people, and the world would be grateful for your
assistance in this matter. Your courage will go a long way towards
making the 2008 Olympics a success.

    With sincere thanks,

    (your name)
